I hate getting pulled into discussions about race/gender (more race than gender), because I always end up biting my tongue because I don’t want to get painted as just another angry black woman but sometimes people need to hear it. Sure, “The Help” was a beautifully acted, well executed film, but it doesn’t change the fact that race relations in the 1960s in the South were FUCKING AWFUL, OK?
And goddamn, I hate when men tell me, “I’m not usually attracted to black girls, but you’re beautiful,” or “I knew you were mixed, you’re so pretty.”
The fuck. Is that. Supposed. To mean.
Just because you end your thinly veiled racism with a compliment, doesn’t mean it isn’t still thinly veiled racism.
Then I have this conversation about fetishizing in my mind and I just can’t.
